Ernie Gallegos was born in 1948 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, but his family soon moved to Colorado where he grew up in Brighton, a small farming community outside of Denver. As a young boy, Ernie found joy and excitement in the world of art. When everyone else was out playing, Ernie was inside drawing and contemplating the shapes of objects and choosing colors.
Ernie was determined to learn about art and painting from the best and went on to study at the famous New York Art Student’s League in New York City. He feels privileged to have been instructed by nationally-known artists David Lefell and Daniel Greene. Ernie later moved back to Colorado where he studied with nationally-known artist Ramon Kelley.
Through his paintings Ernie is able to express his spirituality and love for art. Known for his versatility, Ernie has mastered painting people, landscapes and still lifes. He is able to capture the essence of a place you’ve kept hidden in your heart or the warm, soft light in a landscape making you wish you were there. He liberates the soul and warmth of the people, places and things he paints.
Although Ernie is primarily a pastel artist he also paints in other mediums. Ernie loves the excitement of a challenge and is constantly pushing himself to learn more about art. When asked about what he likes best about art he says, “The whole process of painting and deciding the direction or pressure of each stroke, choosing one pastel hue from a myriad of colors, each small choice creates this magical thing I love called painting.”
