Oil Painting
Deborah Berniklau hails from New Mexico, the
Land of Enchantment. Since a childhood filled
with chalk drawings on her driveway, art has
been the driving force of her life. After noticing
her special talent, her parents encouraged
private lessons and her life’s mission soon took
hold. Berniklau later graduated with a BFA in
illustration from the prestigious Art Center
College of Design in Pasadena, California.
There she studied privately with world famous
Burne Hogarth. After college she worked as an
illustrator doing commissions for Disney,
Warner Brothers, NASA and several advertising
agencies around the country. She also studied
privately with master artists Huihan Liu,
Carolyn Anderson, Daniel Gerhartz, and Jeffrey
Watts. Soon after, she fell in love with western
themes and began to paint them with passion.
Berniklau’s style is an interpretation of a
storytelling process that captures the essence of
the Old West. She takes great pride in her
execution of accurate anatomy in her people and
horses. Berniklau uses her Andalusian horse,
cowboys, and native models for accurate
representations that breathe life into her
paintings. “My subject and goal is the "Heart
and Soul of the American West” says Berniklau.
"I’m a Western girl through and through and it’s
important that the love of the West is portrayed
in my paintings.”
Berniklau’s early inspirations include Sargent,
Zorn, Sorolla, and Rockwell. As a classically
trained artist, she is dedicated to following in
the footsteps of the famous painters, capturing
and preserving the time-treasured part of our
heritage through vivid
works of art.
Berniklau has recently come onto the National
radar with published editorials and features in
Western Art and Architecture, Southwest Art,
and a forthcoming issue of Western Art
Collector. As a proud member of Oil Painters of
America, she won a Western Regional Gold
Medal for her painting “Patiently Waiting”
16”x20” Oil. Her art has been showcased at the
Western Masters in Great Falls, Montana and
the Heart of the West Show and Auction in
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In 2016 her art will be
exhibited in "A Timeless Legacy, Women Artists
of Glacier National Park" at the Hockaday
Museum in Kalispell, Montana. She also juried
into the C.M. Russell Museum and auction
March 17th - 19th 2016.
